Real Stories, Real Root Causes

5 Energy Clinic blends Eastern and Western medicine to find the root cause behind symptoms that don’t otherwise add up. Below are four real cases from our practice (names changed for privacy) showing how a Five-Organ Energy Assessment can reveal what’s actually driving a person’s health.

Case 1: Julian, 39 — The Breath That Wouldn’t Come

Julian, a 39-year-old mother of two, came to the clinic after years of unexplained shortness of breath. It wasn’t constant — she’d feel fine for three or four days, then suddenly collapse into exhaustion by the weekend, gasping for air with no clear medical explanation. Her appetite was strong, and on the surface she often looked and felt cold to the touch. But her pulse told a different story: strong, forceful, showing no sign of the depletion her outward presentation suggested.

Her Five-Organ Energy Assessment revealed something rare: Heart at 90, Liver at 60 — and Stomach, Lung, and Kidney all at zero.

In the five-organ framework, Heart (Fire) and Lung (Metal) sit across from each other on the controlling cycle, where Fire normally keeps Metal in balanced check. But Julian’s Heart energy surged to 90, fueled by a Liver (Wood) score of 60 — and with Stomach, Lung, and Kidney all sitting at zero, nothing was left to restrain that fire. Instead of a healthy check, Heart began to overact on Lung directly, suppressing the very organ that governs breath. That’s why her shortness of breath wasn’t a separate problem — it was Heart excess acting straight through the controlling cycle onto Lung.

Over 10 acupuncture sessions, focused on rebuilding Lung and Kidney energy to restore balance against the unchecked Liver-Heart fire, combined with an herbal treatment she was already taking from England, Julian’s breathing steadied and her mood swings became far less severe.

Case 2: Richard, 40 — Ice Beneath the Surface

Richard is an active, athletic 40-year-old — fit build, disciplined, a bicycle always set up in his room and ready to go. On the surface, he looked like the picture of health. But a closer check revealed something more serious: developing blockages (mild aneurysm-type swelling) in both legs.

His Five-Organ Assessment showed almost a mirror image of Julian’s case: Stomach at 72, Lung at 42, Kidney at 36 — with Heart and Liver both at zero. Where Julian burned with unchecked fire, Richard had none at all.

In the five-organ framework, Stomach (Earth) sits across the controlling cycle from Kidney (Water) — normally a light, balancing check. But with Stomach surging to 72 and no Fire energy (Heart, Liver) present to keep Earth in its place, Stomach began to overact on Kidney directly — like mud silting up a riverbed, thick Earth energy was choking off the free movement of Water, the very element that governs blood and fluid circulation. With no Heart fire to keep things warm and moving, his circulation ran cold and stagnant, like ice water sitting still inside the body. That’s exactly why he was drawn to cycling and hard cardio — instinctively chasing the heat his own system couldn’t generate on its own.

Treatment centered on moxibustion applied directly at the site of the leg blockages, using targeted heat to do what his missing Fire element couldn’t: breaking up the frozen stagnation and restoring circulation.

Case 3: Jane, 49 — Chasing the Snow

Jane is warm, outgoing, and always on the move — her whole online life is beach trips, winter hikes, snow days. Every place she loves has one thing in common: cold. On the surface that reads as simple personal taste. Her Five-Organ Assessment showed it’s something more precise.

Her scores: Heart 106 — by far her dominant organ — with Stomach at 14, Lung at 23, Kidney at 7, and Liver at zero.

Unlike Julian and Richard, whose cycles were effectively stuck — locked onto just one or two organs while the rest sat frozen at zero — Jane’s generating cycle was actually working. Even with no Liver energy feeding it, her Heart fire is innate and constitutional, not built up through Liver excess, and it was still moving forward through the productive cycle: Heart feeding Stomach, Stomach feeding Lung, Lung feeding Kidney, each step carrying a little less heat than the one before. That descending chain is evidence her body was already discharging its own excess fire, on its own, organ to organ.

That’s exactly why she gravitates toward the cold: snow, ocean air, anything that helps cool an innate heat her system is already working to release. It also makes her treatment more straightforward than Julian’s. Where Julian’s organ energy was disconnected — stuck, with no pathway for the excess to flow anywhere but into an attack on Lung — Jane’s system stays connected. Acupuncture’s role for her is to support and speed up a clearing process already underway, rather than repair a break in the cycle itself.

Case 4: John, 37 — The Weight Water Carries

John is 37, sharp, happily married, and by every account doing the right things — disciplined, strong mentally, driven. What didn’t fit was his body: significantly overweight, slow to move, a belly that jiggled with each step. That mismatch between a clearly strong mind and a body working against him is what prompted a closer look.

His scores: Kidney 90 — nearly triple a typical reading — Heart 46, Stomach 7, Lung 7, and Liver at zero.

Two numbers told the whole story: Kidney at 90, Liver at zero. In the five-organ framework, Kidney (Water) is meant to generate Liver (Wood) through the productive cycle, feeding it and fueling growth. John had no Liver energy there to receive any of it. With nowhere healthy to go, that enormous surplus of Water spilled instead into the controlling cycle, where Water overacts directly on Fire (Heart) — dousing the very organ responsible for his metabolic warmth and drive. That’s the real root of the weight: not appetite, not willpower, but an overwhelming Water element with no Liver in between to absorb it, smothering his internal fire and slowing the body’s ability to transform and burn what it takes in. Picture water and fire locked in a direct standoff, with no wood there to turn one into fuel for the other.

Because his Heart energy is still present and meaningfully strong at 46 — reflected in his sharp mind and drive — this isn’t a case of low overall vitality. The imbalance sits specifically in the missing Liver link. Treatment for John centers on rebuilding that pathway: diet and exercise choices that specifically support and awaken Liver function, giving his excess Kidney water somewhere productive to go instead of continuously dousing his fire.
